Our sleds are made of 3/16" thick high-density polyethylene (HDPE) — the same standard used in arenas and slaughterhouses. Resistant to cold, impacts, moisture, and odors.

For our The Last Ride hunting sleds, we favour UV-stabilized HDPE (high-density polyethylene) for its combination of impact resistance, flexibility, durability and resistance to outdoor conditions.UV-resistant HDPE offers excellent resistance to abrasion, impact, moisture, cold, and temperature variations. It also provides good resistance to tear propagation when a sheet is subjected to significant stress. Its flexibility allows the sled to absorb impacts and ground movement rather than transmitting all the stress to the material..

High molecular weight polyethylene (HMW) has good abrasion and impact resistance, but its resistance to tear propagation is generally less advantageous for our intended use. A tear initiated in a sheet of HMW can tend to propagate more easily. For a sled that may be subjected to significant loads, branches, rocks, changes in terrain, and sometimes demanding handling, this is an important factor to consider.Teflon (PTFE) has a very low coefficient of friction and excellent chemical resistance, but it is much more expensive and its properties are not needed for the manufacture of the hull of a hunting sled.Other plastics, however, may be too rigid, more sensitive to cold, less resistant to impacts, or less suitable for prolonged exposure to UV rays.That's why we chose UV-resistant HDPE: in our opinion, it offers the best balance between impact resistance, tear resistance, flexibility, durability, UV protection, and cost, for manufacturing a sled capable of withstanding real hunting conditions.
